Nach seiner Zusammenarbeit Mitte der 1980er-Jahre mit der damals sehr populären Sängerin Maria João wurde Carlos Bica europaweit durch sein hinreißendes Trio Azul mit Frank Möbus (Gitarre) und Jim Black (Schlagzeug) bekannt, dessen Klangbilder im Laufe zweier Dekaden zu Folk-Pop-Free Jazz-Soundscapes von filigran-grooviger Originalität ausgereift sind. Umso überraschender ist deshalb, dass Carlos Bica nun für sein jüngstes Album I Am The Escaped One, dessen Titel sich einem nachdenkenswerten, im Digipack abgedruckten Gedicht von Fernando Pessoa verdankt, mit Daniel Erdmann und DJ Illvibe zwei völlig andersartige Klangkünstler gegen seine sonor-erdig tönenden, oft gestrichenen Basslinien stellt. Was unerhört neue Farben ins aufregende Spiel bringt. Denn Erdmann serviert mit grandios angerauter, samtig-duftiger Intonation am Tenorsax wunderschöne Melodien zu Bicas erregendem Tieftöner, während das Turntables-Genie DJ Illvibe für stimmige Grundierungen im gelassen fließenden Geschehen sorgt. Und dabei mit bewunderswert sicherem Griff in die Plattenkiste von mal delikaten, mal knackigen Rhythmus-Pattern über frickelige Noise-Attacks bis hin zu archaischen Blues-Vocals jede Menge starke Sounds in ihre intensiven Interaktionen einbringt. Die sich in toto als immens attraktive Synthese aus Tradition und Moderne erweisen.
