Gebhard Ullmann Born in 1957 Ullmann has recorded more than 20 CD's as a leader/co-leader. He received several awards for his work i.e. the "Julius Hemphill Composition Award" ('99), the Deutsche Phonoakademie Award ('83) and many more. Since 1993 Ullmann is a recording artist for Soul Note and commutes between New York and Berlin. His releases for Soul Note, Leo Records, Songlines and Between The Lines have been widely critically acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and have all been listed in the US-college-radio-jazz-charts. Sylvie Courvoisier Born in 1968 performed and/or recorded with, among others, Fred Frith, Mark Feldman, John Zorn's Cobra, Dave Douglas, Jacques Demierre, Joelle Leandre, Ikue Mori, Michel Godard, Mark Nauseef, Joachim Kuehn... Her CDs as a leader/co-leader include 'Y2k' (enja), 'Lavin' with L.Niggli (Intakt), 'Music For Violin and Piano' (Avant), 'Birds of Feather' (Unit), 'Ocre' (Enja), 'Sauvagerie Courtoise' with her quintet (Unit). As a composer her repertoire is varied and includes contemporary concert and theater music as well as tunes for contemporary improvisational projects. She has composed Ocre de Barbarie: a musical performance for metronomes, automated manequins, barrel organ, piano, tuba, saxophone,violin and percussion. She also composed a concerto for electric guitar and chamber orchestra. She received the Young Creators Award of canton Vaud, switzerland in 1996 and the Creation Award, Zonta Club in 1999. Carlos Bica Carlos Bica is one of the leading jazz musicians from portugal, has been voted 'jazz musician of the year' in 1998, has worked together with Maria João for several years and commutes today between Berlin and Lisbon. As a leader he released 'Azul' with Ray Anderson, Frank Moebus, Jim Black, Maria João (Polygram/Enja), and together with Jim Black and Frank Moebus 'Twist' (also featuring Ana Brandão) and 'Look What They've Done To My Song' (both Enja) and 'Diz' with Ana Brandão a.o. (Enja). In the traditional portuguese music 'o fado' he works with Carlos do Carmo, the best known musician of this popular genre. He worked with Kenny Wheeler, Aki Takase, Julian and Steve Arguelles, Alex von Schlippenbach and others. |
