Bica, Santos, Mortágua, a unique trio
The most exciting thing about the music by the trio Bica, Santos, Mortágua is not only the ocean of references they share, but also the instability resulting from not having an explicit leader, as if in recognition of conflict as a musical motif. Bica is a restless composer who boldly approaches pop, erudite music and Jazz, but who is also a meticulous musician; it is this rigour and the authority that results from being a veteran that authorizes him as the warden of the lyrics for the compositions, arguing heatedly with the impetious João Mortágua, who is quick to question them and improvise on them, and motivating the omnipresent guitar of André Santos. And, if Mortágua is a rebellious spirit and also a natural leader, André Santos is the floor they tread, the weaver of the patchwork on which the trio moves, either highlighting or questioning the melody lines of the double-bass, or curtailing the rebelliousness of the saxophone, or providing him with wings. Three leaders and three refined authors, instrumentalists who meet for the pure pleasure of adventure, contributing with their compositions and their particular way to approach their instrument. Music on a knife-edge, feeding on the conflict between the collective and the individual and between the composition and improvisation, Bica – Santos – Mortágua, double bass, guitar and saxophone, the risk and adventure in a unique trio.
